Amahl plays his flute for the Shepherds
A Christmas Opera for All
Amahl and the Night Visitors is a one-hour opera based on the story of the Adoration of the Magi and appeals to all ages and musical backgrounds. The show will have two performances on Friday and Saturday Dec. 11th and 12th at 7:30 p.m. in St Theresa Church.
Tickets are a suggested $5 donation and are available in the church office, in the back of church after most Masses in December, by email at amahl@sttaustin.org or by calling 275-7249.
Amahl and the Night Visitors, written by composer Gian Carlo Menotti, was the first opera specifically composed for television. It was first performed live on NBC on Christmas Eve, 1951. It is performed internationally every Christmas season and remains one of the most frequently performed operas of the 20th century.
The tale revolves around Amahl, a disabled and mischievous boy who lives in poverty with his mother. One night, the Three Kings stop at the family’s hut for shelter on their journey to pay homage to the Christ child. What follows is an enchanting account of how faith and unselfish love can work miracles.
Monsignor Bill Brooks calls Amahl “An inspiring story that reveals the true spirit of the Christmas season. This story shows how faith, charity, and good deeds can work miracles. Amahl is St. Theresa’s gift to Austin.”
